Budgie Questions & Answers
Read on for budgie cage questions and answers.
I've been wanting a ferret for the past three years! I'm 14 i have a job, i have enough money already to get the ferret and food (already have a cage). At the moment i own a cat, a rabbit and a mouse ( i also have a dog but he doesn't live with me anymore). My mum owns 3 budgies (her pets). I take care of my animals, and i know i can afford to pay for their food and vet bills if needed (i've done all my research).
My problem is my mum said no, come to me in a few years. What's the difference? Does she think all my pets are going to die by than or something? I don't get it.
She told me her concern is money, and when i told her i have the money and i also have a job she just said well i don't know.
Any suggestions on how to convince her?
Please don't reply saying their bad pets and a waste of money, i've done all my research and know everything about them.
I bought one (1) budgie/parakeet and it's been 3 weeks since it's been living with me. I come home from work after 7 hours, and the parakeet is alone all day and gets some minimal sunlight. I provide it with a mirror, toys, food, and fresh water every day but it seems to be sad, lonely, and scared. She comes near my finger, but won't chirp or make any noise at all. She looks healthy, eats well, but doesn't seem to enjoy her life.
What should I do? I do play with it about 15 minutes a day and let it out of its cage for 3 hours at night when I'm home. There's always a radio or music playing in the background when I'm gone so it's not too lonely.
can i keep two female budgies and one male budgie in the same cage. and what should be the cage size if i let them out at play time.
at the bottom of his cage, I put my hand in his cage and he got up and walked around the cage bottom. He then used his beak and got himself up to his perch. His feathers appear to be really fluffed out which gives him an over weight appearance. His bottom appears to have quite abit of poo sticking to his bottom, he used to sing quite a bit, but has since become fairly quiet.
Please if anyone knows what this means please let me know
Thank you
i have a 15 year old cockatiel who is not hand tame, and i want to try to tame him but i'm afraid that he's too old to become comfortable around people. he's extremely clumsy and fearful of just about everything, including most toys and food treats... even a mirror freaks him out. he does come out of his cage when he wants to and likes to walk on the table around his cage, and he can whistle a little tune i taught him, but it's taken years for him to get to this point. i've tamed young budgies and lovebirds before, but i've never tried it with an older bird. any effort i make to tame him seems to seriously stress him out... has anyone been able to accomplish this? any advice?
a little background info: about 6 years ago i found him in my backyard, and he had been injured by a cat (which i'm sure was pretty traumatic). i took him in and he's now very healthy and enjoys my family's company, but i have no idea how his previous owner(s) treated him.
ok my mom got this ledger with the money i got from my grades and she says we can spend it anyway we want but i dont shes going to be happy with the decition i want to get another bird i already have finches(and a cat) but i want to move to a bigger bird (keeping my finches) i feed and water my animals clean their cages and take care of them but when ever i mention it she says "it will just be another thing to take care of" but i still want to make her happy and want the bird
and what bird should i get not to big or expencive (dove..canary..)and no budgies(parakeets) srry

1) what size cage is good for 1 Budgie?
2)whats a healthy diet for a budgie?
3) How many toys should i put in the cage for the budgie?
4)Should i buy a very young budgie from a breeder or a older budgie from a pet store?
5) Tips or advice ?
ive had him for 2 years now.
i can hand feed him, but he wont willingly go on my hand and come out of his cage to fly.
every time i manage to get him out he gets scared of me again and we go back to square one.
i want to gain his trust and make him tame
im stuck. Help!
my mum normally puts my budgies cage outside when it is sunny and she did that today like normal. Then at about 2:00pm there was a bang and my budgies cage was on the floor and they were gone. I had two budgies. One was a girl- Bluey and the other ws a boy - Fluffy. i could hear them but i couldnt see them as there were many trees. There is a park on my road i am scared they might of gone there. i am heartbroken as they were the best budgies ever.
will they come back?? i put the cage in the garden with there food and everything. please help!!!
Hello. Anyone know how to get a budgie to eat vegetables and fruit? I know they are important for him. I bought a bag of mixed food but he sits in it (like its a bath) and throws out everything except the actual seeds(which are fattening). So I placed a little grated carrot and celery into a small bowl on the cage floor but he just ignored it. I don't even know if he can see it!
So if anyone out there has discovered a way around this I (and budgie) would be most grateful for your advice :-)
My budgie, Tucker, he wont play with his toys, all he does is sit there in his cage, he eats, he drinks (i think, i hadn't seen him drink before), and he never wants to come out of his cage. I have had him for about 2 1/2 weeks. How do i get him to play with his toys??
We have had a male for about a month and he is tamed and frienly and quite protective over his mirror, he is very laid back and quite lazy but a joy to be around , we got a female to keep him company she on the other is very acctive , you can tell she wants to be dominant in the cage , they ar ealways bickering over the mirror , so i decided to put another in for each of them , and yet they still bicker over each one. They snap at eachother when they go for something to eat and the other thing is they only bicker when someone is in the room, does anyone know why this is?
Before I buy any, I will be sure to look at care sheets and make sure it's the right pet for me, but I also would like advice from people who own parakeets. I was thinking about getting four. What size cage would I need? What about for just two parakeets? Do males get along with males? Females with females? Males and Females? How is there noise level? What's the minimum amount of time they should be let out of their cage to play? How often would I need to clip their wings? Are there any reasons why I wouldn't want a parakeet? Anything else I should know about owning a parakeet?
Thanks in advance!
I just my budgie yesterday, but the pet store clipped all his primary feathers so he can't get more then a few inches off the ground of his cage. I'm really upset that they did this because now he can't stay perched or reach his food and water, I had to put them on the ground so he could eat and drink.
Is there anything I could do, I also noticed that they clipped all of the budgies feathers in the same way.
How long will to take for his feathers to grow back, and will he be ok?
I only have one budgie, I didn't want two, they will make alot of noise because they will talk to each other, and he wont bond with me as well.
I lowered one of his perches maybe that will help, I know his secondary feather are not clipped, but now he has no flight feathers. I guess he will get used to it, and I will have to wait until he molts and gets new feathers, that I wont be clipping. He couldn't climb up to his food and water because he is very young and not that strong to pull himself up, for a long time.
Is it normal for him to be sleeping in his tummy? I just think it may be because he is very tired, but I put some things for his to perch on, he just is sleeping on his tummy, I've only had him two days.
The female budgies nose is starting to turn brown. i was wondering why this is happening. They also have a nestbox in the cage. thankyou
i've never seen love birds in a cage with anything else and i was thinking of putting budgies in with mine.
my budgie bites really viciously when i go to take him out of the cage but is fine outside the cage he dose not like millet ? so cnt train him with that how can i stop him bitesing he dose not seem to be scared becase he gose towards you instead of only biteing when you go near him and p.s he maby a she to young to tell
previously a owner of a cockatiel experienced)anyways I found a budgie bird stray outside. It was sohungry and its face looked lost so i gave it a home. After one week i felt bad for"sunny" because he seemed lonely. I purchased a female at the store. Now i have two healthy budgies female about one year old and male about 2-3 years old, living in a medium sized cage. They are getting along well. They are not sick, so i was able to put them in the same cage, after watching them for many hours together i noticed they would be fine together in that cage. I bought a nest for them because the people at the pet store told me that they would definitly have eggs. I would like to know from your own experience how long do you think it will take for them to have eggs. I am not trying to make money off of breeding them. I just want them to do as they want. I just need some information about their relationships, eggs, and everything else there is to know. Thank you so much for helpin me thanks
He stops as soon as I take him out of his cage. The cage door is open right now, and he's not coming out. Just looking out. He's on a perch directly in front of the cage door.
Is something wrong with his back? May he be injured?
I just got him four days ago. Please help!
Oh and, he stops doing that as soon as I approach him.
We want to get a parrotlet but we have three budgies and we want to know if they can get along if they are in a really big cage.
We have three budgies and we want to get a parrotlet but we dont know how they would react to being in the same cage. Any help would be great thanks!
he seems listless and when i picked him up he seemed to pass out and then come round again,i only have him a week but in that time he seemed to be sleeping a lot.its my first budgie so i could use some help please.
I have two pairs of budgies and yesterday I got home and they had layed an egg but it was broken on the bottom of the cage...and today I got home ad there was another egg on the bottom of the cage unbroken.
They have nests which they are in and out of most of the day but they still lay their eggs on the floor of the cvage and just leave them there.
Is there anything I can do and also can I try hatching the eggs outside the cage using a light or something?
Thankyou
i just got a new budgie and it went flying to his cage but missed by a mile and hit the wall then he started squarking

In September of 07 we purchased 2 (one-year-old) Parakeets as a b-day gift for my 13yo daughter (dreams of being a Vet.). TODAY, we are the happy parents of 2 budgie parents and six eggs laid between 7/7-17/08. She (Kiwi) is nesting happily and her mate (Octavious) is helping so much. They seem to be doing fine but my question is......Are we supposed to help in any way? The cage we have is 26x14x22...Will this be sufficient space for the family? We will be seeking advice from the vet at PetSmart where we bought the birds and we are currently researching on the net.... but any advice from experienced keet breeders will be accepted with gratitude. Thank you.
I need 2 know....thank youuuu! I want a boy and a girl but I dont want them to have babies!
I have a pair of canaries in a breeding cage in my aviary.
I didn't take the first egg away like I am supposed too, because she was sitting on it and it was warm. She laid 3 eggs and now they have one baby canary and 2 eggs left to hatch.
I gave the parents eggfood along with fruit & veg and seed etc, while she was sitting and I gave them a bit extra of the eggfood when I found the baby this morning. The baby hasn't been fed yet and I think it won't be fed until about 9pm tonight.
I am a new at breeding canaries so could you give me any tips and suggestions about breeding them and looking after the chicks when they are in the nest and fledging.
I breed zebra finches and budgies, so I have a basic idea, but I want to know any good advice please?
Every few days a there is a black residue on the water dispencer in my budgies cage. He seems to be in good health, we live in scotland with soft water, no limescale and we give him the purified water from the filter jug we have.
i should add we change the water every day its just every few days we notice this stuff.
about 4 days ago i put her in a breeding cage with the male. she is now very fond of the nesting box but hasnt begun to make it into a nest in it yet. i don't know why but she is not wanting to be taken out of the cage any more. whats up with her..?

One's a male and the other one's a female and they live in a small cage with only one ring, they are now both at the top of the ring fighting each other because there's no space for them to sleep, what do I do?
I just bought a brand new, bigger cage for my fairly new, budgie, any ideas on how to switch him from his old cage to the new cage. He isn't used to my finger yet and will probably be terrified.
What should i do?? my dad dosent want to take it to the vet bc he says its a sprain but idk if its broke or sparind and i dont know if i should just wait and see if it gets better. What should i do????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
in the same cage?? would there be any problems??
I mean, they are always in their cage and they like being in their cage I guess cuz whenever I take them out they fly back to it, but for them to get used to me and allow me to pick them up without persuasion again (cuz they used to before one escaped), is it enough to just be in the room and make a few comments every so often cuz I am always in the room, or do I have to like try to take them out all the time and play with them and talk to them and keep forcing them to be out of their cage??
their wings ARE clipped so they can't get back to their cage without help, and they come to me when they are out of their cage and want to get back to their cage and their are somewhere where flying back seems impossible, but it's hard to get them out.
Another problem is that they are proving hard to feed because they are not eating treats. Like, honey sticks or that millet stuff in their cage is what they like, but i tried to feed them some sliced apples and sliced carrots and they didn't eat it, but I put some broccoli flowers to ones mouth and he threw it around with his mouth. So it is hard to reward them, any tips?
My budgies don't have enough room so I need another cage. Thank you
well i've kept budgies before but only 2 in a average sized cage...im planning on getting 4...4 budgies that are tamed/wings clipped etc etc...and how big should the bird cage be? and also pretend i get 2 budgies and 2 lovebirds...would there be any problems? or 2 budgies and 2 cocktails? or 2 budgies, a cocktail, and a lovebird? i really need the help thanks
my budgies keep trying to mate but then keep fighting. There are no eggs yet but theres a nest box. I just need to know whats happening?
I got Kiwi, my new budgie yesterday, but he hasn't barely moved from perch to perch, eaten absolutely nothing, (even though i hung a whole millet spray in it's cage, it's not eating it!) & hasn't chirped either! Does he just need more time to adjust? I have kept his cage door open for hours but he didn't come out!

Alrighty, I need your advice and help.
I am planning to buy a hand raised, hand fed, very very young budgie. I have done all the research I can online, and I am still looking for more! How many parakeets should I buy? I want to tame and train and bond very well with a budgie(s), but I'm afraid he/she will be alone while I am at school. I go to high school, and the new school year's gonna start soon, so i'll leave at around 7:30 and be home around 3:00-4:00.
And is it possible to tame and train and bond with 2 budgies equally?
Oh, and can you give me all the details in breeding, caring, taming, training, loving, cage sizes, toys and what games they like, and ANYTHING that you can tell me about them. Please, I'd love for all you to share your parakeet knowledge with me!
Thanks a bunch!

Ok well I was asleep when I heard my budgie Jazz flying rapidly around her cage. I thought she was just being herself but it wouldn't stop and so I went down to see if she was ok. Her wings were spread apart and she was very limp. She lives with another budgie. They had fresh water, food and cage, and a cloth covering the cage so I don't know why she was like this. I took her out and stroked her gently, and she started sitting on my finger then fluttering her wings some more. I put her back in the cage and she just clung to the side not moving. She was breathing normally. I put my finger to stroke her and she moved away, her old self. What it wrong with her? It's 4 in the morning here, will she be OK? I will call the vet in the morning.
Thank you.
I thought my budgie, Stuart was a male.
I thought this because he always bobs his head at the cockatiel, [who is not interested in the least!] tries to feed the cockatiel, is a very loud and arcobatic and copies almost all the sounds i make to her!
[she can make the kiss sound, click sound, wolf whistle, this weird "WEEYAAAHH" thing, and she screams "WOOO!" when she gets excited.]
But then it's cere changed dark purple-brown. A few days after that, the brown peeled off and there was a pink [i mean PINK] cere.
A while after, i got her a friend because the cockatiel hates her and her friend is not tame but he sits on my finger. I put her in the new budgie's cage and then a day later her cere turned brown again and is to this day! NOW he/she's head bobbing, fluffing up the front of her head and giving a type of 'kiss' that involves her getting really close to my face and sometimes clacking her beak lightly against my mouth or the other bird's beaks.
IS HE/SHE MALE OR FEMALE?! D:
Also, Her eyes are still black and it seems like she has a red pupil, but he/she's a little more than 11 months old. I know that happens with certain types but im not sure which.
This is a picture of her/him
http://s64.photobucket.com/albums/h165/youssarian/?action=view¤t=DSCF3720.jpg
Thank you all but i realize that the cere usually determines the gender- BUT it seems like his/her behavior is outweighing it. Because he/she's acting like a courting male. And because of the lack of grey in his/her eyes unlike my other budgie, maybe the cere is different too?
Well i have been a bird lover my whole life, every since my first bird Kiwi, a yellow budgie. He lived 9 years! When he died i was devastated and came across my second bird, Petri, a blue budgie we acquired as a baby from a friend. Petri died recently when my Mom was out of town and my Sister through a party where they got drunk and blew Hookah smoke in his face which i am certain killed him. I was so upset, he was only 2 years old AND my sister killed him! Now she is moving out and i feel safe enough to have a bird again and this time i am looking at Cockatiels. I heard they can learn to talk(even though my Budgies never learned) and make great pets because they are very sociable. A few questions though...
How much do Cockatiels cost and where can i buy them(or look)?
Is there any way you can tell how old they are by looking at them?(
Both of my Budgies were free range(meaning they didn't have a cage, just a play area), will i be able to do this with a Cockatiel?
Anything else?
i got a budgie two days ago :) i know that it's very normal that he isn't eating or drinking or really moving because he needs time to get used to his cage and me and stuff. he didn't eat the first day i got him. but the next night he ate and drank and moved around because i heard him while i layed in bed. when i woke up i noticed his poop was a little watery. i went to the pet store today and when i came home i saw that he had been eating his poop because he had it like stuck under his beak! is this normal? (i did get him from a "bucket o budgies")
it happend the other day when it was real hot but i just thought nothing of it and today it was cold and my budgie ( 12 months old but ive only had him for 9 months ) and i didnt want to touch it but i can only describe it...it was a creamy kind of colour with seeds in and the ammount of it was about the size of a pea...my budgie seems fine appart from it...is he regurgitating ? and if he is why do they do it...he lives in a cage of his own and im not sure im ready to get him a lady friends :S
but the main thing is...is he ok ?
So I'm going to PetSmart to get my new budgie. Please don't tell me to go somewhere else. There are absolutely NO breeders in my area. I've triple checked. My mom's taking me today. I'm a first time pet owner. 14 years old. I wrote a list of everything I'll need to buy, so here it is. If I am missing ANYTHING, please! tell me.
1. Cage- 24x18x33
2. Cuttlebone
3. Ring toy
4. Millet spray
5. Bird seed
6. Bird bath
7. Mineral block
8.Extra toys
9. 3-4 separate perches
10. 1 rope perch
11. Water bottle
12. Food dish
Here are the things that I'm going to make sure that my Budgie is healthy and it is a male.
1. Blue cere
2. Most active in flock
3. No discharge
4. "Vent" is clear of droppings
5. Bright feathers
6. Flies around
7. Playful
8. Friendly towards others
9. Feathers are not always puffed up
That's it! If there's anything I'm missing, please say so!
I'm really dedicated to my new feathery friend.
Please don't be rude! Be honest. I don't want my budgie to die in a few days!
Yes, I'm only getting one as of now. If I feel like I can't commit to it when I start school, I'll try to get him a friend. (:
Recommended Budgie Cages
Budgie Cage Requirements
Budgie cage requirements, what bird cages to avoid, recommended budgie cages...
Budgie Cage Requirements:
- The cage should not be made of toxic metals such as zinc, lead, or brass (wet brass tarnishes - this tarnish is toxic). Stainless steel is best or powder-coated.
- Do not put your budgie in a cage that is rusted or has chipping paint.
- If you find an old cage in the attic, basement, trash-picking, or at a yard sale that only has a few rusty patches or a little chipping paint and you want to re-paint it for your budgie - DON'T. Throw it out and get a new cage on eBay. The cost of getting a cage sanded down and then powder-coated is more than you would pay for a new cage on eBay.
- Big enough for the budgie to not only fully turn around and spread out their wings, but to fly from one side to another - a absolute minimum of 18x18x24.. Buy the biggest cage you can afford. Parrot cages are MUCH cheaper online than they are in the petstore. Please check ebay for new parrot cages at great prices!
- Horizontal bars because budgies love to climb!
- Width is more important than height as budgies fly horizontally.
- Bar spacing should be no wider than 1/2 inch so that the budgie doesn't get their head stuck between the bars. Their heads are smaller than they look!
- No round cages - a budgie doesn't feel safe in a round cage - there is no back wall to retreat to. Along the same lines, be sure there is a wall behind at least one side of the cage.
- A good size rectangular cage is best - the palace shape or house shapes actually restrict the room the budgie has to fly and play and create a mess of poop and food the others do not.
- Do not place the cage next to a window. Drafts can cause the budgie to become sick. Keep the cage out of direct sunlight.
- Place the cage in a room you spend alot of time in (though not the kitchen - because of fumes and hot unsafe surfaces) but that will be quiet at night.
- Budgies require alot of mental stimulation. Be sure they have lots of fun toys and that you rotate the toys frequently so that they do not become bored and so they get used to change.
- Budgie-proof the room the budgie will be flying in by making sure no open water surfaces, open windows/doors, uncurtained windows, other pets, etc will harm them.
- Be sure to cover the cage at night to provide darkness and a secure cover to prevent night-frights.
- Several perches of varying widths are necessary to promote healthy feet and legs and to prevent foot sores caused by plain wooden dowels. We recommend the wood branch perches and rope perches.
- Avoid: sand perch covers (cause foot sores), mite protectors (cause respiratory illness), bedding (breeds fungus and can cause crop impaction when injested) - paper towels or plain newsprint are best so you can watch poops for health.
- Covered food and water dishes so budgies don't poop in them and get sick.
- Cuttle bone to chew on. It's good for their beaks and provides needed calcium.
- Use pipe cleaners or twist ties to secure all cage doors and windows. Budgies are smart little buggers and can quickly and easily figure out how to give themselves some unsupervised out time!
- Place the best wood perches up high - and the stone ones that are good for toe nail health down low. Budgies like to be up high and will spend most of their time on the nicer perches that are good for their feet. We don't recommend using the wooden dowels that come with cages for anything other than step-ups and collecting budgies from around the room to return to their cages.
- Make sure there is a food bowl for each budgie in the cage so that they don't have to fight over it or the dominant budgie doesn't let the other budgies near the food.
- If you are going to have several budgies in the same cage - it's better to move them at the same time rather than moving a new bird into another's birds cage to avoid territorial issues.
