Budgie Cages

Budgie Questions & Answers

Read on for budgie cage questions and answers.

From what I heard, the bird becomes obsessed with it, right? Also, does having a mirror have the same affects as having another real bird in the cage? I ask that question because I want to get a new bird, but should I expose this newbie to my other bird? One last question, My bird has had a mirror all of it's life (like 6 years), so, what will happen if I take it away, will she be more friendly towards me and no longer "obsessed" or will it be angrey and lonley?

I have around 6 budgies in a cage outside that have been mating rather frantically; in the past 6 months there have been about 18 eggs. HOwever most of the eggs never hatched. a few weeks ago the most recent lot did happen to hatch. Unfortunately, only one of the birds is still with the mother, the rest have been rejected, 1 died when it was still pink and with the mother. While I the remaining budgies were brought inside into a box, I noticed that their crops were inflammed (i.e. the were constipated) so the vet told me give them a lot of liquids which has helped reduce them to their normal size. I know it's recommended that they only be fed baby budgie hand feeding formula but I am having a lot of difficulty finding it where I live (anyone know where I can get it in Hyderabad, India??). I need to know how to make something like the formula by hand, from scratch. Thanks in advance

Please please read and answer! I used to have a really cute greeny yellow budgie for more than 8 months. i loved it soooooooooooooo much. out of a scale from 0-100, i loved it about 86. More! it used to fly around the house, climb around my head, sway happily on my shoulder... and when one day my mum was cleaning, she noticed that the budgie (Squish-Budge) was fluffed up, closing its eyes and nodding. i was holding it and talking to my brother. my mum pointed Squish-budge out to my and i got hell scared. i took it to the cage, covered it with a thick blanket, but not too much. and i put it in semi darkness as the pet cares thingy said on the internet. and after a week, it really got ill. i wanted to go to the vet but it was too much money. so i felt so evil, guilty, sad, angry and devastaed at the prospect of having Squish-Budge die. on the last day, (im crying as i type this) i took it out, knowing i'll have to part it forever. i snuggled it close to me and i cried over it. that night, my brother in law came to my house and BOOM my mum came into "OMG GUESTS, FEED THEM, WHATEVER THEM DO THIS TO THEM AND THIS TO THEM HELP THEM BLAH BLAH THEM and she forgot all about our family pet. i said a small goodbye to Squish-Budge like i always did, and went to bed. next day. it died. yh. my 16 yr old bro saw him first. good thing, he told me in a way that didnt straight away tell me it died. i just knew it in my heart, and i saw it. at the bottom of the cage, feet up, eyes closed, and dead. the stupid thing was, i didnt cry. jst tears welled up. diddnt want anyone to see me cry coz 1. it was a school day, i'd be interrogated there if i come red-eyed 2. i tried to be cool and calm. 3. i diddnt have much energy to cry i went up to my parents to inform them that Squish-Budge has died. they cuddled me up for two minutes, told me it's gone to heaven, it'll be alright. tears sort of leaked out then. anyway, i went ti school and suffered a lot. how can i stop the grief?

I have 2 budgies. One that ive had for about 3 weeks and one i've had for about a week. Both are very frightened by me when i need to be in there cage (feed, water etc). I feel like they'll never get used to their new home. There's nothing around that can scare them (children, pets etc) and their cage is in a nice corner of the room so that they can see everything and are able to feel safe. How long until they stop acting frightened when i get near them and should i let them out of their cage before they get calm? on a side note, the one has escaped once when we first got it and flies straight into walls with its head, falls to he ground then gets up and does it over and over until i capture it... im pretty sure he can see, so why does he do this?

I got a new, young, non-finger-trained, budgie two days ago and... While I was putting a newly bought ladder toy and cuttlefish bone in his cage he flew past my arm, out of the cage door and onto the curtain rail. How can I get him back to his cage? I have shut all doors and windows, tried approaching him with celery as close as I can too (not very close, because I can't reach him). He's now back in his cage. Thanks, everyone.

I have two pet budgies. One is a boy and another is a girl. I want to train them but we have a big cage and i dont wanna sit there with my finger in the cage until they are not scared of me. With my old budgie i would take it out of the cage and into my room. It would act scared for a bit then i would put it on my lap and it would be fine. It then would act like im not ther. It would climb me and sit on my shoulder. I would make noises and it would make them back. I want to know if doing this to my new birds is harmfull and is there any other methods that dont require a large amount of patience.

a whole day it was just sitting on the cage door playing with a string and it dosent like to fly around my house why? i kept his favourite mirror a ball tied to a string and more he comes some times stands and playes near the cage with his toys and go back inside why wont he come out, rarely in the morning he likes to come take a walk on the carpet but not flying he goes inside the cage and flies why?

I currently have two little budgies, Bonnie and Clyde ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8pm5ZunpBA ). I've had them since April, and they were not hand raised or tame. However, they are still under a year old. Their cage is big enough for at least 2 more budgies to live comfortably and still have plenty of room to fly and scurry about. I'm not buying a new budgie anytime soon, however, in the future, I would like to know. These birds are only semi-tame, as you see in the video they are playful and are in very good feather. They will sit on my shoulder and with some coaxing the male will let me pet his tummy and his back. The female always starts a singing game with me where she'll get as close to me as possible (while she is in the cage) and she will chirp very loudly. She gives me a little look, then I whistle back at her. We can do this for hours! However, they still aren't completely comfortable with me, and like I said before, they are just semi-tame. My question is, if I were to bring in a hand raised friendly budgie to the family, will the other budgies learn from his example? Would they only become more timid? Would the hand raised budgie start to become fearful of me? If I ever do get a new budgie, would it be easier just to have him in his own cage? Thanks :)

When I first got my first budgie (about 5 years ago) I was beginning to tame him fine and he would let me stroke his tummy and stuff. But I noticed that during the day when I was out he would pull his feathers out, so I brought him a female friend. I they tried to train her the way I did him but she would just bite me and not let me near her and after a while he wouldn't let me touch him either and every time I put my hand in the cage they go mad and run away from me. What should I do? I feel bad because I can't let them out of the cage because I'm scared they won't go back in again.

i have this budgie which im hand feeding Duo to parenting problems. I think that its ready to start eating seed, as its harder and taking me longer to feed. Because it sometimes just tips the food off the spoon or it will eat some then try to escape away from the spoon. i was thinking about putting a this years parent raised budgie in a cage with it so i would show it how to eat would this work?

I am wanting to know how to make seed sticks for budgies. I am meaning the sticks that you can buy at the shops and just hang in the bird cage but home made. I have tried some recipes but they didn't work, the seeds didn't stay on the stick and was all runny. If some recipes involve an oven can you tell me if it needs to be preheated or not please. Cheers

My mom need to get rid of her two budgie birds, so i said id take them. Things are tough financially lately so im wondering roughly how much it would cost to care for budgies monthly with all they need. I will have the cage and birds obviously, so aside from that, what do they need and how much does food etc cost?? 10 pts! Thank you Oh and i live in canada

Does this mean that the others won't hatch? How long do you think it will take for all of them to come out if they are all fertilized? Should I take the bird cage to the vet to check if any of the eggs are fertile? Thanks! :) Also, since the one that hatched needs a lot of attention from the mom, she is not sitting on all the eggs and is just focusing on the hatchling. Should I be concerned? Thanks again! :D

My nans neighbour gave me a budgie as a present, last year he escaped from his cage and flew away we'd had him for 7 years :( and although scooter will be greatly missed i think its time the house was filled with chirping again haha. Sooo my question is, she has 3 baby boys left i think their a couple of months old, should i take all 3? I was hoping to hand tame them and be able to play with them, but alot of people say that if you have more than one at a time its impossible to tame them because they are more interested in each other? I could get a flight cage but if i cant get them to trust me enough to let them out the cage and be able to put them back in safely then i don't think its fair to the budgies to be locked up all the day. what do you guys think?

I've been working on training my budgie, who refuses to come out of her cage. She'll sit on my finger just fine, but as soon as my hand heads to the cage door, she'll jump off and back onto her perch. I want her to come out and get used to being out, so is it bad to grab her with my hand on her back to keep her wings back and allow her to look around outside? I've read some things where they say you shouldn't grab a budgie, but I want to just hold her. Will this make things worse?

We have had our hand tamed budgie 2 days. When we put a hand in he sits on it. When he is in there alone he is running from end to end in the cage so we thought he might want to come out. But then when we try and take him out he just tries to fly away so should we wait longer before taking him out? wings are clipped, he can't actually fly away.

My budgie Doesn't let me touch her or go on my finger until around 8pm, I think it's because she's not getting enough sleep. I know your going to say i should put a blanket on her cage so she'll be calm and sleep properly the only problem is that my Mum won't let me but i don't know why. What should i do.By the way I already tried telling my Mum why I want to do it but she doesn't want to listen to me =(

I used to have 2 budgies, but one of them died :'(. So now I have a budgie who is all alone, and kind of afraid of me. I take her out of her cage often, but she only likes to sit by the window. She looks really bored. What things can I do to make her less bored? She has toys in her cage but doesn't play with them. OR should I try and give her up for adoption? I don't want to get another bird, so don't suggest that. Thanks :D

hey guys! im not worried about my bird or anything, i just know a lot of you like to give us here facts and tips on caring for our birds! yah im 13, and i have a lovebird name ollie! she is very attached me and chirps whenever i call her name! its pretty funny! she lives in my room too! ok im going to ask a series of 10 questions! so when you answer these just number them 1-10! 1. i mix in to her food kaytee seeds, kaytee pellets, spray millet crumbs, and nutriberries. (broke up) is this a good diet for her? she eats the same amount of everything! 2. she has many fun toys, perches, a sand perch, a cement perch, and a rope perch. are these good? 3. she reguritates to her toys and humps her bed......is there a reason why she is in love with objects? lol. 4.i keep some little nic nacs and toys at the bottom of the cage, is that good? or bad? 5. we took out her bed cus all she would do is hump it, was that a smart idea? 6. she tries to pick at my braces! why?? 7. she flies away from strangers sometimes..why? 8. she is very cute! 9. she was handfed...this is good right? 10. is a lovebird a better bird than a budgie if your looking for a sociable small parrot? ok guys! thats all my questions! thanks so much for your time! ollie and i do appreiciate it! :) yah so if you are going to answer some or all, whichever you choose, just number them the way i have here! thanks again so much! :) im looking forward to getting some answers!

Will he get claustrophobic watching the trees outside? I'll let him fly in the house w. The enclosure is only for when I'm away

In the same cage. Or will they fight.

I wish to get a budgie, a male one as I heard that they are less aggressive. I can stand loud chirping. Of course I can take care of it, and my cousin used to have a budgie, it bit me alot }} she didnt know ANYTHING about that poor bird!! {{ so I can learn how to handle it too, and tame it. I'm willing to spend even months trying to tame it. Right now I'm looking for cage and only the "best" food brands. is this a big cage? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4186118 or http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Aviary-Bird-24x16x16W-Divider-2434BLK/dp/B0002A6V3S/ref=pd_sbs_k_5 or http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Aviary-Bird-30x18x18-Divider/dp/B0002A6V4M/ref=pd_sbs_k_2 or http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754298&clickid=cart I'm not sure if budgies need alot of space Because I'm not quite done with my research, So I thought while I'm searching I could atleast get some idea of what I should get. budgies' bars on the cages should be 1/2 or less right? or is it, NEVER 1/2 and always less? I can buy a bigger cage surely, but that will have to wait, since these are the ones I found quickly on amazon and petsmart. maybe for these use as a travel cage would be nice :) Cant wait to hear your reviews, thank ya! :) UM, UM.. I'd like to know if they are better in pairs? I heard that they don't bond with you enough if you get a pair? I really want to interact with them, which is why I wish to get them. Thank you for the wonderful info!! I couldnt find any GOOD links on how or what to feed the budgies high quality food, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Most of the budgie websites are really hard to read, which is bad for me since I have bad eye sight. :) This information means the world to me - haha, thanks guys :3

I really want a bird, and I found that the perfect bird for a beginner like me is a budgie. I even found a really nice cage that is perfect. My dad says he would be glad to let me buy one, I just can't get my mom to agree....help she's suborn!!!

my budgie hasnt been acting right for the past few days, always sleeping and what not and not being playful like normal. i just woke up to find him laying on the bottom of the cage. i assumed he was dead, but after closer inspection i noticed he is still breathing and not responding to touch. opened his eyes one @ me only for a second, then went back to 'sleep'.... its late here here where i am, what can i do for the lil guy?? i dont know how hell take being moved @ this point.. side note: there is another budgie in the cage, seems to be fine tho :/ Thanks for the help guys, but unfortunately by the time i found my budgie, he only had about a half hour left :(

hi all, im thinking off buying stop pecking spray for my male budgie because it bites alot, is this a good soloution for it. yes or no ive tried everything say no and put it in the cage, im getting annoyed of it now what shall i dooooooo???? thanx in advance xx

I've got two budgies, 1 female 1 male. The male is probably about 7 months or so old now and the female is about a year and a half. they've been together in the same cage now for about 4 months. when i first got the female, she sat by me, let me pat her, watched me and didn't fly away when i went to hold her and did NOT bite. but she seemed extremely quiet and didn't play with her toys and just seemed to it there staring at me. when i finally got the other budgie the male they both flew around and everything, made noise when i left the room and when i got back they were quiet again. i soon set them outside during the day and just let them be. occasionally I'd reach into the cage to hold them and teach them that my hand was not a threat, they both got used to it. now i've moved house in with my mum and when ever i go to put my hand in the cage the male bird does this really loud screeching noise while the female tried to get away from my hand when i try to hold the female, she bites extremely hard so i put her back into the cage and when i hold my male budgie he just squirms a lot and nibbles my hand. why are they doing this after being so good?

I left my budgie alone in home. And he will be alone for maybe 3-4 hours and im nervous :-( he have some toys in cage and fresh food and water and also i left TV on. Also i think he will sleep when it gets dark outside in like 1-2 hour. He will be ok? I am worried

My male budgie seems to be hurting the eggs idk for sure but I know when he gets in the nest box I think they get cracked and the hen throws them out my question is if I spilt the cage I have a dividing cage and seperate them will the hen be ok by herself I haven't seen her eat anything but when I let the cock and hen out he feeds her what seems like a lot and she begs for it and if she is only eating that will that be enough for her if the cock occasinaly feeds her whenever I let him out supervised

well i got him yesterday and he seemed just fine, a little frightened. Then today i got it out of its cage and had him in my finger for a while though sometimes it would run away. But then i gave it some millet seed and he ate really quickly and loved it, then i noticed he started to close his eyes and do this weird thing with his beak and he would like make a little noise with the beak. I have all the conditions for him, he has a nice big cage all to himself with lots of toys food water and a nest for coziness, what could be wrong. The i also noticed he would put his head in his wings, and that is a sign of sickness since birds hide their illness. Please help me im crying and i dont know what to do, i dont want it to die. Should i take it back to the petstore? also he just lays in one same spot and he gets really fat and once in a while he just shakes and opens his feathers, sometimes he has his eyes open when i look thru the corner of my eyes, but then when i look at him he will quickly close them again, as if he doesnt want me to look at him. Also he is always falling of its perch and sometimes its hard for him to get back up on it, and he is breathig pretty weirdly.

a year ago, my older sister asked my parents for a budgie, and they said yes. ( i was miffed because i ask for pets all the time and they say no before i finish the question, and my sister knows nothing about birds, i am the animal person!) anyway, she never takes lola out of her cage, and doesnt take proper care of her, i had to ask permision to touch her, until, like, 2 months ago (wth?!) and i wanted to train her while she was young because my sister certainly wasnt doing it... so, now that my sister is going off to university, she is leaving me the bird... i said sure, but now i am stuck training a budgie who doesnt like leaving her cage, having anyone touch her head, and she is just unsocialized. we have 2 dogs, a hamster, and a fish along with lola. i take her into the bathroom on the occasion where i spray her with a warm spray bottle, to bath her,let her fly around, sit on my shoulder, etc. i wish i could train her to come through the house, without flying into the walls or windows, being a victim to the dogs... i dont want to get rid of her because she had been my pet for a year, you dont just toss pets because they arent trained! so if anyone has tips on gaining trust with a budgie, training a budgie, i would appreciate it soo much! (btw, she jumps on your finger if you press it to her belly, but if you move her away from her perch, she jumps onto her perch, if that makes sence) and she also wont talk, so if anyone has any tips, or help, i would be super happy, thankyou!!

hi basically i have a pair of budgies one male and one female! and i bought a brand new cage for them which had absolutely everything with it! it came with a breeding box which i left in there for them to nosey around/play about in. And my male budgie keeps peking at the box then bobbing his head up and down getting all excited, and his eye pupil get's smaller so i was just wondering what this means when the peck a the box in a strange sort of way? and i also have a second question , what does it mean when there eye pupil gets smaller when the get excited? thanks

I just got a male young parakeet about an hour ago. i got it a nice big house shaped cage that fits about 4 parakeets, but i only got this fella and im moving in one more in a few days. So like when i got him into his cage, he climbed up on my finger and almost fell asleep, he was very friendly but then i put him in his cage and he wont go in my finger anymore he just runs away. In cage: A cute mirror with a stand and beads for play, water bowl w water, food bowl w food, cozy nest, a round perch with a bell and beads to play with, 2 normal perchs, rings, bells, balls with little balls inside, and a little hanging mirror with a bell. So it should be comfortable (tell me if i can get it anything else). Ok i want it to get used to being in my hand, i want to let him out a lot and play with him, teach him a couple tricks and maybe even teach him to talk! but he needs to get friendly first and accustomed that the human hand is OK, the pet store guy told me to hand feed him but what if he wont eat from my hand? how can i get him accustomed to me and teach him to do stuff. He seems really tired from all the stress and all, so im going to let it rest but i would like to know this stuff for tomorrow. ALSO, what can i feed him, because i thought we had bird food but looks like we ran out so in the meantime what can i feed it, until i can go buy it some food tomorrow. Please and Thank You. ~ Robin

Hey everyone, I need a budgie cage plan, I have looked everywhere, but they are usually too big. See one of my budgies has clipped wings, so i need a cage that isnt huge, but a nice size that is easy to build

Hi, my 10 year old budgie has been really sick since this morning... she has been throwing up a lot, not much seed, more just clear, mucus like stuff... She was also struggling to fly well, so we put her in her cage, and now she can barely open her eyes or respond to us... Im really worried and was wondering what was wrong... It is sunday afternoon so no vets are open round here, and we have been to 4 different local vets over last couple of years, and none of them had a clue (2 somehow mis-diagnosed egg binding on my other budgie, despite me telling them I thought that was what was wrongs, and this eventually killed her... Another told me she didnt even know what age they roughly live to...) So really as much as I wish I could, I cant take her to a vet... If someone could offer any advice please do... She really doesnt seem like she will last much longer... oh, also she has been plucking her feathers on her upper chest recently, but no where else... the vet didnt know what was causing it, but I have been giving her aloe vera, it seems to have helped a bit, but where she has been pulling looks like they may possibly be a lump too.. Could it be an infection from plucking, or maybe poisoning from chewing something she shouldnt have (she flies everywhere and has been chewing everything recently) thanks sorry for the long question

One of my three budgies, my male budgie, Jellybean, is acting aggressive towards my other two female budgies (one of the females is his mate), and he is now trying to flirt with one of my two female cockatiels, a lutino cockatiel, Tweety. The cockatiels and budgies have been living peacefully for about one year, now. None of the two bird breeds have attacked one another before. You know how budgies kiss eachother and join beaks? Well, my little purple Jellybean is trying to kiss Tweety! She does not like it, though. Tweety will tolerate it for a while and then move to a different location of the parrot cage. Jellybean will not quit, trying to get Tweety's attention, and I don't know what is going on... can anyone help?

iv had my budgie over a month now and hes young still under 4 months and everybody says how easy it is to tame a budgie under 4 months old but i find taming mine is really difficult, every day for the last month i have been putting my hand in the cage and he kinda got used to my hand so i start teaching him "up" and he does it the odd time but keeps running from my hand and being scared of me, this has been going on since day one, he seems to not want to trust me at all, he also wants anything but me like he even chooses his toys over me, anyone know what i should do to make him really trust me and like me and get used to my hands for good ?

I went to the pet store two weeks ago with my mom to look into parakeets. They were really nice and only 16$ each. My mom said i could have one only if my dad said i could. and he wont let me because he says they are stinky and he thinks i wont clean the cage and take care of it. I do work around the house a lot and we have no pets because every pet we have wanted my dad said no to. I have done a lot of research on them and talked nonstop about them.

Almost every second child budgie in my cage become a prey of feather plucking. I love my budgies i dont want to loose them. such thing makes me very sad. There are no vet facility here. Please advice me some food or any kind of medicine which help them growing feather. and what i do with other who already lost feathers?

I'm starting to get sick of all the questions on here from people who have only had their bird for a month and are mad it's not tame yet. I've had mine for FIVE months and it feels like I've gotten nowhere with him...I'm getting so frustrated. I have one bird because I heard they were easier to tame this way, I'm planning on getting him a friend if I can ever get him tame. I keep his cage on a table by my bed, and I spend alot of time talking to him, singing to him, just being around him in general. I've done this consistently since I got him in february. I wont lie, he has become a little tamer. In recent months I've been able to get him to walk across a perch to get some millet off a stick that I am holding at the end. He doesn't freak out if I just put my hand in the cage, but I can't get closer than probably 1 foot away from him before he starts freaking out. I'm so scared he's gonna hurt himself. I cover and uncover his cage every night and morning. I've done this since the DAY i got him, but he stills freaks out big time when I do. He sometimes freaks when I give him new food and water, which is every day. Or when I clean his cage, which I do every week. I feel like these are things that he should be used to by now, after 5 months of it. Am I wrong in thinking that? Ever since I was a little kid (about 10) I've wanted a budgie. Now I'm seventeen and I'm just so frustrated because I finally got my little budgie, and now I can't tame him. I've tried every way of taming him that I've come across in my countless hours on the internet trying to find out why I'm having such difficulty. Nothing is working. My mom keeps telling me to just reach in there and grab him. I tell her I won't though because he'll get really scared, flap around and hurt himself, and also because it'll break any trust he has for me right now. I just don't know what to do. Any advice? Please help me. oh, and also he wasn't an adult bird when I got him. I got him when he was still very young.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get her to stop? She is seperated from the male already (atleast a month ago) she isnt with any other budgies, she has no nesting box and she just lays them on the cage floor, she lays them all the time, a couple of eggs a week, she cracks them and then lays more, should i put her back in the big cage with the other budgies, will she get distracted and maybe feel it is not safe enough to lay any more eggs around the other birds with out a nesting box? Im really worried about her and im worried she is going to strain herself too much, i want to try and get her to stop asap. thankyou lorrie, im going to try this in the morning. i had to seperate her in the first place because she killed her baby (when she was allowed the nest box) and she got agressive so we let the father take care of the babies, we were supposed to be giving away the babies a couple of weeks ago but then they both got inured, (1. flew into wall, 2. fell off perch because the father tried to hump it when the female got seperated from him, he is out of this habbit now, lol silly boy :P) but i am going to put the mother back with the other birds and take out the two babies, i will handle them a little and in a few days they will go to their new owners, because they have healed their injuries now.

like first i used to hand feed him and while eating i took him far from the cage and he had no choice but to fly but he could land on any thing except the cieling fan (i keep it off all the time!) so i gave my fingure and he stepped up and took em on the cage and he went in no i put a card board box just out side his cage attached to his door so as he steps out he stands on the box and i put his favoirite toys out side on the box but all he does he come out and only stand on and te box and play with his toys and goes back after a while why dosent he like fly? hes not yet every tame but isnt very sceared of any one

Ok.So i want a bird.but my dad is a animal hater.I will pay for it.it is gonna be a budgie. My brother used to have one and it was messy and my bro would never clean the cage.i have gerbils.i clean their cage without help and i found a way to stop the bird mess.So i can pay he won't have to interact with it.I also told him that if i started not caring for my gerbils and if i got a bird i would find them a new home.Help me convince him!Need ideas!

Which one is the most messy? And how long breaks do they take b/w pooping? Which one is the most friendly, cuddly and playful. Which is more likely to bite? And how hard are their bites? Which one can talk best? Plus I've always heard cockatiels are the best for starters, and thats what I want to get personally but mess is the biggest issue and I cant maintain alot of mess. Maintaining a cage is not a problem, but their poop on the floor doesn't clean off in one go, and dry poops create airborne germs and transfer bird diseases to humans. And thats something I am scared of, I already have health issues to deal with, I don't want more problems. So if they take long periods of break b/w pooping, can I get a single cockatiel? Cause I think one cockatiels poop equals to 2 budgies/lovebirds waste, they are bigger and thats a problem. So can a cockatiel survive alone, with lots of time and care from the owner? EB: Ya I know but I want a pet, I have breathing problem so I cant buy a cat, they can trigger such problems. Dog is not allowed, rabbits need soil.. etc etc. Bird is the best choice, I am not really scared but just want to be on the safe side.

Budgie Cage Requirements

Budgie cage requirements, what bird cages to avoid, recommended budgie cages...

    Budgie Cage Requirements:
  • The cage should not be made of toxic metals such as zinc, lead, or brass (wet brass tarnishes - this tarnish is toxic). Stainless steel is best or powder-coated.
  • Do not put your budgie in a cage that is rusted or has chipping paint.
  • If you find an old cage in the attic, basement, trash-picking, or at a yard sale that only has a few rusty patches or a little chipping paint and you want to re-paint it for your budgie - DON'T. Throw it out and get a new cage on eBay. The cost of getting a cage sanded down and then powder-coated is more than you would pay for a new cage on eBay.
  • Big enough for the budgie to not only fully turn around and spread out their wings, but to fly from one side to another - a absolute minimum of 18x18x24.. Buy the biggest cage you can afford. Parrot cages are MUCH cheaper online than they are in the petstore. Please check ebay for new parrot cages at great prices!
  • Horizontal bars because budgies love to climb!
  • Width is more important than height as budgies fly horizontally.
  • Bar spacing should be no wider than 1/2 inch so that the budgie doesn't get their head stuck between the bars. Their heads are smaller than they look!
  • No round cages - a budgie doesn't feel safe in a round cage - there is no back wall to retreat to. Along the same lines, be sure there is a wall behind at least one side of the cage.
  • A good size rectangular cage is best - the palace shape or house shapes actually restrict the room the budgie has to fly and play and create a mess of poop and food the others do not.
  • Do not place the cage next to a window. Drafts can cause the budgie to become sick. Keep the cage out of direct sunlight.
  • Place the cage in a room you spend alot of time in (though not the kitchen - because of fumes and hot unsafe surfaces) but that will be quiet at night.
  • Budgies require alot of mental stimulation. Be sure they have lots of fun toys and that you rotate the toys frequently so that they do not become bored and so they get used to change.
  • Budgie-proof the room the budgie will be flying in by making sure no open water surfaces, open windows/doors, uncurtained windows, other pets, etc will harm them.
  • Be sure to cover the cage at night to provide darkness and a secure cover to prevent night-frights.
  • Several perches of varying widths are necessary to promote healthy feet and legs and to prevent foot sores caused by plain wooden dowels. We recommend the wood branch perches and rope perches.
  • Avoid: sand perch covers (cause foot sores), mite protectors (cause respiratory illness), bedding (breeds fungus and can cause crop impaction when injested) - paper towels or plain newsprint are best so you can watch poops for health.
  • Covered food and water dishes so budgies don't poop in them and get sick.
  • Cuttle bone to chew on. It's good for their beaks and provides needed calcium.
  • Use pipe cleaners or twist ties to secure all cage doors and windows. Budgies are smart little buggers and can quickly and easily figure out how to give themselves some unsupervised out time!
  • Place the best wood perches up high - and the stone ones that are good for toe nail health down low. Budgies like to be up high and will spend most of their time on the nicer perches that are good for their feet. We don't recommend using the wooden dowels that come with cages for anything other than step-ups and collecting budgies from around the room to return to their cages.
  • Make sure there is a food bowl for each budgie in the cage so that they don't have to fight over it or the dominant budgie doesn't let the other budgies near the food.
  • If you are going to have several budgies in the same cage - it's better to move them at the same time rather than moving a new bird into another's birds cage to avoid territorial issues.
