Budgie Questions & Answers

Read on for budgie cage questions and answers.

My budgie broke his leg today so I made him a little splint out of a couple of Swan Vesta matches, his little face lit up when he tried to walk.. Unfortunately, I forgot to remove the sandpaper from the bottom of his cage. .

I got a Budgie a few weeks ago. He is 2 months old and he always fly's away from me when I go near him! When I first got him he let me stoke him and hand feed him for a little bit, but now he whenever I go near him he always backs up a bit and if there is no space behind him, he will fly around his cage! I do let him out so he can fly around the house for a bit, but even when I try to put my hand out next to him then, he still will fly to the next place that he can land. Ive tried to leave him alone, and just change his food for a day, but even that doesn't work! Please help! Thanks

So recently (this week) I've been having to leave my budgie alone at home. I haven't been able to spend much quality time with her because of that. Today she has been left alone for already almost ten hours! I thought that I was going to be home much earlier today, but my family had unexpected plans. We will be home in about 2 hours (I'm hoping at least). Is my budgie okay? Will she get sick or something If I leave her alone too much? She is the only budgie in her cage and my mom does not seem to understand that she needs socialization and attention and exercise enough to care about getting home quickly. My mom is like that constantly, and I know that my poor birdie is not okay on her own!!! Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas?!? Anything will be greatly appreciated! And my mom says we can get another bird, but she says "later".

OKAY! I know that you are going to say "Take you're budgie to the vet now!!!" but, I can't at the moment...and that's a fact. So please help, my budgie was in the room when I was doing my nails, and also she was in the room when there was candles lit...I've heard that you are NOT supposed to let your budgie breath in things like this, but I was stupid and forgot, I'm sorry. Now she is at the bottom of the cage, all fluffed up, and I know this is NOT a good sign...So please tell me what I am supposed to do, and how I can help her without taking her to the vet? I'll most likely end up taking her to a vet, but I can't right at the moment, so please answer! Thank you, ~MissVoyage

Okay, I know I ask a lot of questions about breeding. But I need all the information I can get. Recently I wanted to breed these two budgies I thought looked cute and would make cute babies.. I let them bond for about 4 months before I tried putting the nest box in. Than I looked stuff up and found out your not supposed to breed a female budgie over 4 years of age, cause of causes of egg binding etc.. So I removed her from the cage and I realized I had a female budgie that was the same age as The male. But they didn't know each other that well.. So I put them in a cage together wall all the other birds were in the flight cage. And after about 7 days of bonding with the new female they started fighting. THAN the female that was previously with him started to cheer him on and now they keep tweeting to each other, and he's not paying any attention to the new female budgie.. I think maybe he misses her? What should I do to increase the chances of the male and new female bonding more?

I bought a budgie (albino) last week from a petstore (petco), she doesnt fly, as her wings are clipped, she is a baby (around 2 months) , will she get back her feathers and will she be able to fly again ? I read online that if a baby bird's wings are clipped it will never learn to fly or might not develop the flight feathers agains. I have housed her in an aviary and tried putting the perches apart to encourage flying but she doesn't fly. She doesnt explore her cage either, sits in one place for long time and uses only one small part of the aviary. She doesn't eat vegetables either nor the cuttle bone or egg shell, although she chirps well and respond when I talk. Please help.

I am getting a Green Cheeked Conure soon and need some help.... I've read every single website that has popped up on my Google searches, but need and opionion from someone experienced. I currently own a male budgie and need to know how th two will get along. Should I get a male or female green cheek? I need something that would be most compatible with a male budgie (I understand it truly depends on the gcc personality). Another thing, how do I introduce the two birds? They won't be living in the same cage, but need to know how to slowly introduce each other. I've read up on isolating the gcc, but need more info on how to and what to and everything else about that. Also, any tips on taming the gcc? It seems like it'll be like taming any other bed, but still need some help. I will buy a book, but would like advice from experienced gcc owners. The people that I've talked to at the zoo (I volunteer there so I'm not "animal stupid") didn't have much to say, except for one girl who was very helpful. Thank you very much!!!!!! Also, I found this cage. I think it should be good for the green cheek, but just to make sure, What do you think? *Click the link* http://www.birdcages.com/bird-cages/large-bird-cages/seraflightcagelarge.cfm#pr-header-PRP106

Hi, In July 2011 I took my budgie for a routine claw cut to a new (and recommended by a friend) vet. The vet was pretty rough and removed the bird from her cage with a big towel and took her out of the surgery to do the claw trip (after declaring she had good perch reflex's I amy add) When the vet returned her to her cage she could not stand well and after my repeated insistence (because he was keen we just took her home) he checked her perch reflex. One of her legs did not respond. A long long story but the vet did not really want to know and under pressure offered to splint the leg. Following the splint she looked so pitiful I demanded an x-ray which showed she had a spiral fracture. The way forward was euthanasia or he could try and pin the leg...we opted for pinning the leg out of desperation and shock but it was too much anaesthesia and we lost our poor little bird of 5 years...our family was devastated...we went in with a well bird and came out with an empty cage. I have made a complaint to RCVS and they say that there is too much disagreement between the witness statements (well the vet was never going to give the same sequence of events as me!) and that it would not be possible for a disciplinary committee to determine how our bird broke her leg. This is despite the vet statementing that her leg got caught in his looped towel...but his intern put in her witness statement that my 8 year old shook the carry cage!!!! A terrible terrible lie. Anyway the case has now been closed but I feel so very strongly that the vet was grossly negligent. My question is...does anyone know if I can take something like this further once the RCVS has said that they are not going to forward to the Disciplinary Committee...I feel very injusticed. I am pretty sure if our bird was a horse or pedigree dog it would not have been so readily dismissed. I would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced anything like this before and the outcome, I am just so sad. Many thanks :o(( To be honest, it is not about the money but just how everything happened. I feel so angry at the lies the vet has told, obviously to protect himself, in his statement. It is obvious to me that he was guilty of serious professional misconduct. I have since read the following on another forum that was interesting...and unfortunately from what I can see...very true. "However, be aware that the RCVS acts more like a ‘protection agency’ for vets and is exception reluctant to actually do an investigation. I am involved with a mater in which we have been pressing the RCVS to investigate a complain, only after nearly a year have they finally agreed to ‘consider’ investigating! If I did go to the small claims court...as I guess I could claim for her cage etc etc...where do I start? Thanks for your comments...it really helps to have some positive support...this has been going on for 7 months now and I am sad I can't seem to get the closure I think I need :o(

Hi! Last week I purchased two budgies (Brooklyn & Ike), approx. 4 - 5 months old. I would like to form a good bond with each of them, however, after doing a little research on how to tame them, I discovered it's not reccomended you get two budgies if you want to have a good relationship with them :( Though, from what I've reading, it can be done, but, being a first time budgie owner - I'd like this process to be as easy as it can be for both me and my two budgies. So...my question is, while it's still early, should I seperate these two little guys for short period of time? That way I can spend time each day taming them individually, hopefully speeding up this process, and creating a better bond with them :) After they are tame & I share a good bond with each of them, I would put them back in the same cage. If I do end up seperating them, the cages should be in seperate rooms, correct? Thanks for any suggestions!!!

I really want a bird and don't know which to get. I was thinking either a cockatiel or a budgie, which one? Also if you have a personal favorite let me know so I can consiter it. I don't want a bird that is really loud or chirps/squaks before 7:30 in the morning even if it's cage is covered.

my parakeet seems ill ...i'm not sure of his age,he is normally really energetic and fun but recently he have been really tired, fluffed up and stays at the bottom of the cage...there is another bird in the cage that is a girl though she does not seem any different then normal...is there any solutions to help my budgie... he is one of the best pets i've ever had i don't want him sick....and i can not afford to bring him to the vet,so someone Please Help!!!!!! i have been searching for hours trying to find cures but they all say to go to a vet...please do not tell me to go to a vet

i have 2 budgies. The female one dosent give a fu** when a cat is around. I had kept the cage outside. They were safe in the cage. But the male one overeacts. He just starts to jump like crazy when he sees a cat. Now i heard my other ringneck screaming and i hurriedly got near them. The cat was just sittin 2 to 3 feet frm them.when i was chnging their food, i found three long feathers in the tray. I can judge by looking at the poor male one that he lost them. They look like the longest of his flight feathers. Which are broken from the same side. Will that poor thing get them back??? I am very worried about him.

I have read every single website that has popped up on my Google searches, but still feel the need for more info. I'm getting a Green Cheeked Conure soon and need some info. I currently have a male budgie, so I'm concerned about having the two together. They won't be in the same cage and most likely not out at the same time unless they approve of each other. I don't know if I should get a male or female...? What would be best? Also, I need more advice on how to introduce each other. Websites that I found weren't the clearest on how to do this... Another thing, if anyone has any good ideas for home made bird toys that are SAFE for budgies and conures, please speak up. If anyone has experience living with a Green Cheek, please help me out!!!! Thank You very much!!! (Answers are always appreciated)

I have clean the cage because it was a total mess inside the cage and the mother is now sitting high up on the cage and will not come back down to care for the baby budgie. Is she just stretching out her wings? not taking care cause of a human scent? please help me... ASAP. Thank you P.S ------ I'm freaking out right now.

We got 4 budgie a little over a year ago, and keep them in a very large cage. The diet has been the same for about 5-6 months nothing is added. Today at about 7pmi noticed one of them making weird whisling noise, open mouth a bit, spreading his wings in a half stretch. Nothing else was abnormal. And at 8 he was on the bottom of the cage. I hate myself that i could help him but until now i cant understand what was wrong. Also i have 3 others that i want to help if something like that happens. Does anybody seen their bird do something like it. Please help me understand

I have a parakeet/Budgie. When i go near her she get really nervous looking. she runs and turns around in her cage a lot. I love to hold her and when i stick my hand in her cage she starts to fly around and flap her wings. She kept running into the wall and i was nervous she was going to get hurt. So i clipped her wings. she seems A LOT calmer but still very nervous. I thought it was just a phase, but I've had her for a YEAR!

I want a lovebird and I’ve read that if they live on their own they bond better with their owner. I have a budgie who lives in his own cage and I want to buy a separate cage for the lovebird to live in (yes the cages will be far apart so the lovebird cant peck through and hurt the budgie). I want to know as I work full time (09:00 – 17:30) will the lovebird be okay to stay at home with the company of the budgie in the other cage? Or should I buy 2 lovebirds to live together alongside the budgie? They will both live in the lounge and they will both be allowed out of their cages at separate times in the evening for their exercise.

I need your opinion on this cage: http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/155/gypsycage.jpg http://birdcages-naomie.com/for-sale/0560-butterfly-playtop-birdcage Would this cage be appropriate for either a quaker, sun connure or cockatiel? The cage itself (without base and seed guards) is about 22" x 28" x 40" with a bar spacing of 1/2". Bars are vertical on the back and front and horizontal on the sides. There's a large door in the front with a double lock and two smaller ones on the side, to attach bird baths, nest boxes, etc… The roof open too. We had a cage cover custom made (thanks to my mother sewing skills) to place on it at night. We currently keep a single budgie in it and he seem to love it. When the budgie will pass away (hopefully in many many years!), we would like to get something bigger (most likely quaker) and if possible, keep this cage if it's still in good condition. I like it very much. It's pretty, easy to clean and very roomy. The bars are a bit flimsy but unless any of these species are aggressive bar chewers, I don't think it would be a problem, right? Is 1/2" bar spacing okay?

ok my title doesnt go with this but i just needed some attention to the question but plz answer it even if ur answer is idk thank u anyways my budgie is very scared of me it bites me whenever i get near him and it bites really hard so cant do anything like touch him or give him my finger and i can get him out of the cage by giving it ipod cause theres a recording of him on it so he just follows my ipod right out and i've had it him for 1 year so please explain how to train him also its constantly itching itself not preening its feathers like itching his head body feet everywhere! he never stops he does it 24/7 so can u also tell me if he has lice or mites and should i take him to the vet please answer!

He freaks out whenever I try. I did it slowly and he's been getting used to it but i dont want to give him a heart attack. WHAT DO I DO!!!!???????????????????

I have quite a few pets, including 2 parakeets, who I devote many hours to every week. They are the little noise-makers of the house and they sing so beautifully and cheerfully, I'd get more than 2 but of course they ONLY sing and act comfortable in their small cage. I had a large breeding cage for them to live in, but they were mostly silent the 3 months they were in it. Literally the day I moved them into their smaller cage, they sang so loudly and happily. So I have this small canary-size cage and the huge cage left over. I'd like zebra finches, but are there any other relatively friendly/tameable finches I may buy? I'd also like to know if there are any species of finches that can live singly in cages, not in pairs or groups. I'd put that bird cage next to the budgie cage to keep them company, as I prefer single birds to keep them friendly toward me (the 2nd budgie was a rescue and I wasn't going to get a 2nd one, but she's lovely and the male loves me more than her so it's alright). So the budgies would be able to sing and keep the bird company while I'm away and when I'm back I'll be spending most of the time around the cages in my room. ...Or would the finch hate to be next to the budgies and should I keep it in a separate room? Also... if I don't get finches, I'll probably buy a canary and keep him in the little cage! Are there any other finches that would be lovely little singers in the big cage? It's about 3 feet long, 1 1/2 feet tall, and the width is around 2 feet. I do really love the noise because it keeps me company, along with my dog, cats, and fish. Do you have finches? What species are they and do they sing a lot? Do I make any sense? (hehe) I have a lot of questions, but I've never learned anything about finches before this! Thank you!!!

Well, when i put my hand in her cage she crawls up on the side of the cage, and when someone gets near the cage she starts to go toward the side of the cage. I used to have another one that wasnt shy at all, and want i want to do with my Budie is be able to get her wings clipped so i can hold her, but first we have to get her more social, how do we do that.

Today I was watching my newly 2 day bought budgie for a few minutes she did her normal routine climbing around the cage etc. But then after I petted her and stroked her belly, and then closed her cage door, she stood there and then tucked her head behind her wing. She was definitely not sleeping because her eyes were open. She only stopped this after I opened the cage door again. I read up online that this is a symptom of illness, should I be worried?

Ok i just got her 3 days ago. Im not sure if she is just getting use to the environment or what but she is jumping all around the cage, running from side to side. She'll stop for a bit then she'll start right back at it again its kinda funny though, im just scared she is going to hurt her self because i haven't found the appropriate cage for all of that. My question is is this a normal act for Budgies and would you consider this exercise?

Here is my plan: I have a male budgie, i am buying a female budgie, i will introduce them slowly, they will become friends (hopefully) they will live together, they will become bonded (obviously this might not happen, but these are all things im hoping i know this could not happen) when she is old enough i will put a nesting box in, they will have a clutch of eggs, they will hatch, they will bring them up then i will handle them and they will be lovely tame babies, they will stay with the mother and father and me in the same room, they will always be free to fly from the cage, (biggish cage) there will be no other cage involved with the babies, and i will keep them. Now your job: -Can the babies stay with the parents forever? -Will brothers and sisters go off in couples and stay bonded? Tips, advice, comments, hatrid whatever please give me any reasons on why this wouldnt or would work, thankyou.

I bought a Budgie two days ago from a pet store. She was in the cage with another Budgie. Ive done research and ive seen where it says it will be harder to hand train a Budgie from the pet store verses one from a breeder. Is this true, and has anyone ever hand trained a Budgie that they bought from a pet store? If so how exactly did you do it. I would really appreciate the help Thanks in advance I bought some millet today she loves it. I watched a youtube video where they held the millet in their hand and the Budgie ate it, so i tried it and she trusted me enough to eat it, after i held my hand there almost 20 minutes lol, but it was a very pleasant experience i cant wait till she is tame. I just wish i knew a faster way to trainer her lol. Is there a faster way or should i keep doing what im doing and give it time..

My budgie Snowball just lost a BIG feather and suddenly his wing is sticking out at a weird angel. I don't think his wing is broken because it isn't drooping like a broken wing would be, but something is DEFINITELY wrong. He is still acting happy and he is still a good flyer, but I can tell he's in pain. If you are wondering, yes, I did have his wings clipped when I first got him, but the long feathers that grew back are the ones that fell off, and also, there is another budgie in his cage with him. If anyone knows what could be wrong with him and what to do about it (other then going to the vet, because there are no avian vets in my area) that would be really helpful. Thanks!

I have a boy budgie hes ice apartfrom he occasionally bites, he gets complete free'fly' all the time he can come out his cage whenever the door is barely ever shut just the odd night a month or something, so i just wanted to justify that :P I have 2 female budgies downstairs completally untame, they wont let you even put your hand in there cage, and they wont come out, i wanted to breed my boy budgie with the two females but i was afraid there would be jealousy so im going to get another beautiful girl for my boy :) So i wanted to know all about breeding When i introduce them in my room they will be both out of his cage and then when they become... friends sort of i will maybe put her in his cage for some safety, obviously she will have time alone in a private area of my room away from me so she can be calm after the journey from the petshop/store (im british) then maybe they can get on? (ANY TIPS??) Next question... How long before i know they are ready for breeding and what are the things to do, a breeding box? then hope for the best??? What must you do for the chicks, can i handle them after a few days, i want them really tame so i would need to be handling them as soon as possible, without the mother abandoning them... will the father help out, will he be there is there any chance of the father hurting the babies? or the mother?? what do i feed them?? obviously i will be doing more research than just yahoo but i hope someone who has done it them selves can leave a nice detailed answer?? How many will she have with her first chicks? (will only be having one litter, do you call it litter? i duno) Any thing else pleasee any tips, advice, what did you do? :) THANKYOU, i doubt anyone will answer but thanks very much if you do i will pick best answer :)

Okay, so my budgie, Tweeter, is super sweet! I love her so much and we have a lot of fun together. But when I take her out of her cage and try to pet her, she always runs away from me like i'm trying to stab her with a knife or something. If it helps, she is about 3 years old. All coments appreciated!

This post might be a little long so bear with me! I have already asked a lot of questions about budgies and have got answers but still need help! My budgies aren't trained, and their wings aren't clipped so it is hard to train them but i am NOT clipping their wings! I know its not but i always think of it as being animal cruelty, anyways, i need help on training them! I have tried so many times and nearly all the videos on youtube have budgies with their wings clipped, so i need help on how to tame them. They are about 8 months or older and i still haven't quiet got the catch yet! you could say im a hopeless budgie owner! I have just been watching the two fly around in their cage for so long now, and just today i have been thinking i have to start training them NOW! I want to let them fly around in my room, but im afraid that i wont catch them, and i want to get some millet to see if that will help get them back in their cage, but it even costs so much on ebay! They have never been let out of their cage before and i am hoping to give it a try, but i am scared i wont catch them. Please help me! I want to start training them by flying around in the room so that they are with me, but budgies fly SOOO fast and you can't catch them! Still, i don't want to clip their wings :P PLEASE HELP! i have been trying for months that seem like years!

I'm 13 yr old and got to school mon-fri 7:30am-4:00pm and are involved in extra curricular activities about 3 days a week. I really want a pet but 2 keets are kinda out of the question (my parents) but trust me when I have time I'll defenatly be with it and playing with it and I know it's a bid responsibility? Feed and play with it every day, change cage every 3 or so days ect ect ...so what do you think with my schedule and everything? Thank you and other info would be great!

I have a new pet budgie, I've had him for exactly 3 weeks today. I'm in the process of trying to tame him, but I'm not sure if what I'm doing is working. After letting him get adjusted to his new home for the first week I started taking his food out of his cage before I went to school and when I'd get home, i'd put a piece of millet on mine hand and after while he'd jump on my hand and eat the millet from it. I thought he'd be comfortable with my hands by now, but he still freaks out and flies all over the cage when i reach in slowly to cage his food and water. I'd really appretiacte it if you all could share with me what you did to get your parakeet tamed, and how long it took. Any tips you all have for me would be greatly appreciated as well. PS: I would also love to get another Budgie, but when would be the right time to get one, and would my male parakeet get along better with another male, a female, or does the sex even matter? I appreciate all the help and answers I can get, Thanks :)

i got my budgie at about 12 weeks. He is now about 14 weeks. I had him finger tame in the first day and he has been a very bird so far. I got him to sit on my shoulder as well and he has ate from my hand and preened my hair. But lately he has been flying around the cage scared whenever i put my hand in the cage to get him out. And when he is out he flies all round the room not behaving at all and keeps flying away me. Is it just because he wants to be annoying and like a child seeing as he is young, or have i done something wrong which has lead to this behaviour. It is very annoying and i get very angry and impatient about the way he can behave. I am really thinking about having his wings clipped so he becomes more independent on me and it will stop him constantly flying away. He always flies on top of my wardrobe and curtain rail. He knows it annoys me because he stares at me chirping like a little kid misbehaving. HELP!!

Is sad hestill eats but not as much as heused to. Wen it first happened he would leave my shoulder I had to leave his cage open so he could come find me or hewould go crazy but nowhe wont even let me touch him. What should i do?

i just got two new budgies. when i got home i set the travel cage into there new big cage. they will not come out of the travel cage. :(( should i force them?? or will they just come out in there own time. one more q: i choped off a lilac brance and turned it into a play gym for them...it this ok? do i need to bleach the wood or somthing?? thanks:)

Hiya! I've been looking for a pet for a while now, and when I first read up about pet rats, I began to realise they were the pet for me. I began watching videos on youtube of other people's rats, looking up everything I could to do with them (how to house them, what they need to eat, etc) and I basically really, really want a pair of rats. But the big problem is that my parents won't let me get them! I can see their point of view - I had a budgie who very VERY sadly passed away in December, and my parents think I didnt clean him out much. And to be fair, I didnt clean him out MAJORLY often, but every week or so. I think I was just a bit daunted by the amount of mess he made, especially as his cage was right in the corner so it seemed like a really big task. However, I can assure you 100% that I would definetly clean my rats out, because I'm planning on moving my room around so that they have a huge wall space for their cage & supplies etc, not stuffed in the corner at all. I would also be willing to pay for as much as I can manage for them - I did work out before that I could pay for everything, however I've gone down a bit on money now, so thats not quite possible - but I COULD pay for quite a bit of it! And before you ask, I DO know most of things about pet rats - I know they have to, have to, HAVE to be kept in pairs for health and social reasons, I know that they preferably have to be with their own gender, etc. So, please can you help me think of ways I can prove to my parents I am responsible in the pet-keeping area? They know I'm really mature for my age (Nearly 13) and that I would care for them properly, but its the cleaning out they are concerned about. Oh, and the smell :/ I already tried shower like, 100 times a week, doing my nails all nice and keeping my room imaculate so they can see that I can take care of myself so I can take care of rats too! but its failing miserably!! Please Help!! Thanks LOADS in advance!! Jamie Xx Okay, those first two answers are really NOT helpful - 1) I asked how to CONVINCE MY PARENTS to let me get PET RATS, so at least have some reasons before u start suggestion other random pets please, and 2) just... just, no... I'm not actually gonna slap... no, just please dont be so stupid!!! Okay guys, before anyone else tells me not to get pet rats because of this and this, I'm not being mean or anything, but its not very helpful. I didnt ask for your opinions, I asked for you help. So if all your gonna say is 'dont get rats, they're disgusting' etc, etc - dont bother to answer, because I dont really care tbh, about what YOU think of rats. Haha, dont mean to be mean, so sorry if it comes across that way! But, I'm not gonna get into how intelligent domestic rats are, how they are actually cleaner and carry less germs then domestic dogs, yada yada yada, I'm not really interested in what random people think of rats at THIS particular time, on THIS particular question!! So, thank you! Xx :-P

I have 4 budgies and two times this week I woke up to them flapping their wings and screeching. It usually happens around 3 in the morning. When I get up to check on them all 4 of them are at the bottom of the cage, 2 of them have actually broke blood feathers. I just don't know if their fighting or if its night frights and what I can do to help it.

I have a budgie, i want to know what are some really good toys, budgies enjoy? Also is it okay to retame my budgie using gloves, he sits on my finger its just occasionally he bites and im abit of a... scaredy-cat or you know... what are some good foods, and treats healthy and unhealthy things i could make, to give him? Just for fun... -What is your budgies name? (if you have one) -Whats their favourite toy? -Favourite treat? -Tame or Untame? :) Also my budgie looks angry alot, hes always aloud out of his cage the door is never closed he has full free range of my room and occasionally another room but hes quite settled in this one, its just sometimes when i get him out his eyes look angry, like as if he has eyebrows pointing down, and this is when he usually bites? and also when hes tired...

I had my pet budgie out of his cage and he was sat on a rock on the mantle piece perfectly still and my girlfriend came round after a few minuets she noticed him and walked up to him then said I love your ornamental budgie it looks so real and went to touch him which made him decide to fly away which made her jump out of her skin. Just how funny is this ?

I already have a male budgie and he lost his friend about 4 months ago so im getting him a new friend tomorrow. I need help because i can not quarantine the new bird and i was thinking if maybe i would take a look at all the pet shops in my city and try to find the one that has the least budgies in a cage. and also will it help if i bathe my budgie first before the other one meets it? PLEASE DONT TELL ME TO TAKE IT TO A VET BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE AN AVIAN VET WERE I LIVE

Petals (my nephews puppy) keeps following me around and I'm not even her owner. Last week, I came out of the kitchen and Petals had gave me a cute look with her eyes. As I went out to the hall she followed me. I then went upstairs, she followed me. She follows most people in my house but I think she likes me the most. Second question: When she comes over to my house she is always peeing everywhere. And I also have 2 budgies. They have both been separated because they were fighting with each other. Petals seems to go over to one of them and paw at the cage. I was talking to the budgie one time and Petals came over to me and pawed me. It was so cute. What does the pawing mean?

Can they live in the same cage together or do they have to have a cage of their own cheers

I have 2 pair of Budgie, two male and two female. I always give them good food, i.e. egg food, vitamins, vegetables, fruit and seed mixture but in spite of that they not mating. I have given them two nest box a big cage and everything. Some one please give me tips....

I have three pet budgies two Females and one male...one of the hens is making a nest and the male is helping her out...but do i have to separate the other hen from the cage or could i leave her in the cage with them

We have 3 budgies, all males in same cage, all healthy, one of them is very tame and always flies over to us and sits on us for hours. Last week I noticed him making a whimpering noise, it's not constant, he does it sometimes when he eats, sleeps, hanging out on us. He has no sign of illness or being sick, he is very active, eats normally, chirps a lot, not acting sick at all. Anyone know what it can be?

my one parakeet (who is a female) gets very jealous when i'm playing with my other budgie (who is a male) i dont know why she does this. but i'm getting tired of her biting me, and its getting painful. i was thinking of getting rid of her, but she's too cute to do that to. i have a separate cage, so what should i do with her? should i get her another female friend and put her in a separate cage? i'm bonded to my male parakeet, and i don't want to lose that bond with him. he's getting bullied by the female parakeet as well. help?

I bought myself a budgie about a year ago in a month. He was supposedly hand fed, but has been a nervous wreck since then, I got him some toys, fed him mullet often and even took him to a neutral room to get used to his new home. It didn't work, he doesn't bite, but he is always freaking out and jumps to a corner close to the top of his cage and honda stays there sort of upside-down for hours if he's moved or we're cleaning or put new perches in his cage. even though he's not aggressive, he is very anti-social, won't eat from anyones hand, or perch on anyone's finger. Is there still hope? I love having birds and I don't want to get rid of him and just buy another one, I really want the poor thing to loosen up a bit

Budgie Cage Requirements

Budgie cage requirements, what bird cages to avoid, recommended budgie cages...

    Budgie Cage Requirements:
  • The cage should not be made of toxic metals such as zinc, lead, or brass (wet brass tarnishes - this tarnish is toxic). Stainless steel is best or powder-coated.
  • Do not put your budgie in a cage that is rusted or has chipping paint.
  • If you find an old cage in the attic, basement, trash-picking, or at a yard sale that only has a few rusty patches or a little chipping paint and you want to re-paint it for your budgie - DON'T. Throw it out and get a new cage on eBay. The cost of getting a cage sanded down and then powder-coated is more than you would pay for a new cage on eBay.
  • Big enough for the budgie to not only fully turn around and spread out their wings, but to fly from one side to another - a absolute minimum of 18x18x24.. Buy the biggest cage you can afford. Parrot cages are MUCH cheaper online than they are in the petstore. Please check ebay for new parrot cages at great prices!
  • Horizontal bars because budgies love to climb!
  • Width is more important than height as budgies fly horizontally.
  • Bar spacing should be no wider than 1/2 inch so that the budgie doesn't get their head stuck between the bars. Their heads are smaller than they look!
  • No round cages - a budgie doesn't feel safe in a round cage - there is no back wall to retreat to. Along the same lines, be sure there is a wall behind at least one side of the cage.
  • A good size rectangular cage is best - the palace shape or house shapes actually restrict the room the budgie has to fly and play and create a mess of poop and food the others do not.
  • Do not place the cage next to a window. Drafts can cause the budgie to become sick. Keep the cage out of direct sunlight.
  • Place the cage in a room you spend alot of time in (though not the kitchen - because of fumes and hot unsafe surfaces) but that will be quiet at night.
  • Budgies require alot of mental stimulation. Be sure they have lots of fun toys and that you rotate the toys frequently so that they do not become bored and so they get used to change.
  • Budgie-proof the room the budgie will be flying in by making sure no open water surfaces, open windows/doors, uncurtained windows, other pets, etc will harm them.
  • Be sure to cover the cage at night to provide darkness and a secure cover to prevent night-frights.
  • Several perches of varying widths are necessary to promote healthy feet and legs and to prevent foot sores caused by plain wooden dowels. We recommend the wood branch perches and rope perches.
  • Avoid: sand perch covers (cause foot sores), mite protectors (cause respiratory illness), bedding (breeds fungus and can cause crop impaction when injested) - paper towels or plain newsprint are best so you can watch poops for health.
  • Covered food and water dishes so budgies don't poop in them and get sick.
  • Cuttle bone to chew on. It's good for their beaks and provides needed calcium.
  • Use stainless steel quicklinks to secure all cage doors and windows. Budgies are smart little buggers and can quickly and easily figure out how to give themselves some unsupervised out time!
  • Place the best wood perches up high - and the stone ones that are good for toe nail health down low. Budgies like to be up high and will spend most of their time on the nicer perches that are good for their feet. We don't recommend using the wooden dowels that come with cages for anything other than step-ups and collecting budgies from around the room to return to their cages.
  • Make sure there is a food bowl for each budgie in the cage so that they don't have to fight over it or the dominant budgie doesn't let the other budgies near the food.
  • If you are going to have several budgies in the same cage - it's better to move them at the same time rather than moving a new bird into another's birds cage to avoid territorial issues.
