Budgie Questions & Answers

Read on for budgie cage questions and answers.

i recently got given an aviary that had a torquisine parrot (neophema pulchella) a.k.a a turquiose parrot and i was wondering if you had any information on it. i had to take it out of the aviary as it was being attacked by a cockatiel. it is now in one of those small budgie cages.i have got a bigger cage but i cant find any info on how to set them up specifically for grass keets.please can someone give me some direction on setting a cage up for a grass keet.also if possible provide picss of any cages you have setup for any of ur birds

I've had a budgie for almost 2 years now and would like to teach him some tricks, but every time I stick my finger in his cage he goes crazy and starts flapping around. Any help would be appreciated.

I got a budgie which wasnt tame at all and after many many long hours i have now got him to a point where he will step up onto my finger when i say 'up' but what im wondering is where can i go from here? He is still abit nervous when i first put my hand in the cage until he realises its me then he settles abit but what is the next best thing to do with him? Also sometimes i see him hopping from pirch to pirch alot is this common? (obviously i cannot let him fly loose in my house until he is confident enough with me that i could safely get him back into his cage without needing to catch him as this would loose all his trust in me)

My budgie layed her first egg yesterday, i came home today and there was 2 more eggs layed i have two females and two males in the cage but i think only the one female is laying. My problem is that i have two eggs in one nest box and another egg in the other nest box? Should i put the lone egg with the other two? I did for a while and the female budgie layed on all three and then mum said i should put it back cause it might be the other females.... what should i do i don't want it to go cold? No, i have two males. okay thanks! yeah mum wants to get rid of the other female anyway. Because she's not a very nice bird and besides she gets bashed up anyway because she thinks their her eggs (which their not). But will do thanks heaps

i notced that my feamle wont mate with the male, so i looked in the cage and noticed that the pirch my be to close to the back of the cage and her tail is touching the back of the cage and i know in order to mate she needs to lift her tail up, so is this y she wont mate? also ive been feeding my budgies comercial bird seed and i never noticed any problems, but i keep hearing that they could get fatty tumors and to feed them whole grains and stuff, but i dont know what to use for whole grains for them so will comercial seed be ok? if not, what kinda of grains should i feed them (an exact product if u know any) and plz no more of them shoe ads plz

my budgie does flips in his cage and dances to music and sings music and scratches him self 24/7 as well as puffs up his feather an then after a while he stare sneezing hes sneezing all the time with flew ed put still hiper is he ok?

I have had two budgies (both male) for about 9 months. They are tame and get along great with each other. I want to get a male cockatiel and keep him in the same cage with my budgies. The cage is huge so space wouldn't be a problem. Is it okay to keep them together or will they hurt each other? Please help!

i have been told 2 stop my 18 month old cockatiel bitting me i should get him a female. would he be ok with a female or shell i leave him on his own. i have 2 budgies that he loves but are not in his cage. and advice would be great thanks for that. they fly around together all the time. i was just worryed about putting the 2 males and the female together as i dont want them 2 pick on her as she is only 7 weeks old....

A family member found an adult white dove in his backyard. They want to give it to me. It is tame and won't fly away. Do you think it is an escaped pet? I will try to find it's owners, but if not I would really like to keep it. I have two green cheek conures and two budgies...the different types of birds are in different cages of course. If I do decide to keep it, Ill do the research of course, but any name ideas (either sexes)? Also, any care suggestions for a white dove? I know not to keep birds from the "wild' near my domestic birds...im quite skilled in birds, just not doves. Thanks! He doesnt fly away because he is sticking close to people...it's not that he can't fly away, he just wont He seems like a pet. His wings are clipped..

I had one budgie and he seemed depressed and always sat in the same part of his cage doing nothing no matter what i did.. I tried everything but then finally i went out and bought a new budgie to be his friend. My first budgie is very friendly and not teratorial at all toward the new one.. but.. every now and then i see this new one snapping at my old one and i dont know if i got a bad pair.. when i first got them they kissed and fed eachother.. but now they dont anymore. The new one keeps getting meaner and meaner towards him.. I talked to the lady at the store when i bought it and explained the situation and she said i have 14 days to bring it back if it doesnt help, and i have 2 days left. My old budgie is very friendly, he never bites and would always sit on my finger. This new one bites me really really hard and wont let go and leaves marks. My question is should i take my new one back and try to get another hand fed one? i dont want her to be mean to my old budgie eather?! Is this normal behavior for birds, or did i just get really lucky with my first very friendly bird? I feel guilty getting rid of the new one, but my main concern is my first bird and i am afraid she might become more agressive and actually bite him hard. I dont know much about birds so please help! also the cage is very large, pleanty of room for both.

my partner has a budgie that has become very shy. 2/10 occasions when i see him he will chirop when i whistle otherwise he will do nothing. he dosn't like it when i put my hand in to allow him to sit on it, and he wont even fly out of his cage when all the traps are open. what can i do. he is still drinking and eating, just very scared. :(

i was wondering if i could live my budgies in the cage but outside when its sunny! i understand that they should not be under direst sunshine so i put them in a shade. is this okay or no

We have two budgies, The youngest one, Bertie, we got just after Christmas, and the other one we rescued about 2 months ago, he is 6 years old whilst Bertie is 9 months. They share a cage without arguement but Bertie is incredibly jealous about Kiwi. Kiwi cannot play with toys without Bertie moving him, nor can he come near us, or have a peice of lettuce or carrot. He is always moved by Bertie. What can we do about this? We love our birds very much but we worry about about Kiwi becoming depressed by Berties behaviour. Just to let you know, Kiwi isnt hurt it any way, I have a seperate cage for Bertie for a few days to see if things calm down. I am not allowing Bertie to bully him, thanks.

Hello i have 2 budgies male and female. Ever since i gave them a bath the male got on the females back in the bath [with water like a pool] 2 days ago and now the female is pecking at the bottom of the cage where the paper is at and she also took a peek at the nesting box but she didnt go in. So when would they lay the eggs after they mate? Its berly been 2 days. Also is it good that i have their nesting box inside the cage? http://s513.photobucket.com/albums/t340/fluffy_fireball2/?action=view¤t=Picture013.jpg but now the nesting box is in the right corner i moved it and they have a big cage.

I have two small pure white parakeet(don't know the breed) and my nanny gave us her one budgie and I'm wondering if it would be okay to put them together in one cage. Both cages are large.

Okay, so like about a week ago, I let my not quite tame new budgie out for a little fly, but then he started panicking and hurled himself at walls! I was scared, and he refused to come back into the cage to safety, and he was so frightened of me it took me quite a while to get bundle him in a cloth and put him back into his cage. After that incident, he became scared of me (obviously). He's an one year old budgie, not hand-tame, so I've been having trouble taming him. Treats don't work on him!! :( please help me tame him!! i really want him to like me and be better. ive tried soothing words and everything... and he allows me to stroke him for a while, then he quickly flies over to the opposite side of the cage.. whats up with that??? How can I regain his trust? And I'm scared of letting him out to fly now because he'll hurt himself and he'll be more scared of me.... What do I do?? Thanks in advance and I hope to get an answer ASAP! Please help! :)

I got a new budgie yesterday and its a girl, her name is Mini and shes 4-5 months old. She isn't eating or drinking. She chirped 3 times and pooped a couple of times. The cage is pretty small, but I'm planning on taking her out of the cage once shes tame. I think she might have diarrhea because her "bottom" is dirty and some of her poo is slightly watery than the others. Oh and shes not scared of my hand. I can pet her but she slides to the opposite direction. How can I tame her and get rid of her diarrhea? And some other tips would be nice!

my friend gave me a turquosine parrot that was in an aviary with 2 budgies and a weiro and she said it just sits there, i recently found out the weero was attacking it and i now the parrot on its own in a budgie cage. should i get it a bigger cage and does anyone have any information or have one themselves. thanx P.S turquoise parrots are only 20cm and about 10cm high

I have a 7 month year old budgie. There are a couple of problems... first off, today while my budgie was outside of his cage, for the very first time, started to do this weird thing with its neck and head and then out came seeds and then he shook it all everywhere.... it was sorta like vomiting but im not too sure. Any advice on what the problem could be?? I was trying to put him in his carrying case for traveling in the car when all of this happened. Another thing is that Einstein (my budgie) has a really bad habit... he has a bit of a biting problem. When my two cats are near his cage, he would jump on over and try to nip at their noses. Sometimes he gets them and sometimes not. Also, its not only animals... but humans. He bites everyone. Im not too sure why. If someone puts their finger near his head or even just near him outside the cage, and most likely in, he would snap at your finger. How do I break this habit?? Thank you everyone for answering my two questions. Please add as much detail as possible.

So I got a budgie today (June 28) and need some help. I'm new to this whole thing, but did a lot of research. Its a girl, 4-5 month old and its blue. I gave it a small mirror, budgie-safe bell and some thing to shread on. I couldn't buy the cuttle bone today but I will in 3-5 days later. Also its not eating and its not playing with its toy. I got at 3:00 and from 3 to 8 it only pooped 2x! Also the cage isn't that big. Its 11w x 8d x 10h! I'm getting a bigger cage next month or 2/3 months later. Also has 2 plastic perches. One on the top and one at the bottom so it can land and eat. Oh I forgot to mention theres a little swing. Her name is mini and her wings are clipped! OMG! SHE CHIRPED 3 TIMES!!!

I have a huge problem with my budgie bird being overly sexual. His behaviour has gotten out of hand WITH hands. He's overly active/hyper 24/7 anyways but lately his been humping/masturbating -trying to anyways- my hands. I flick him off but he comes back with a vengence. He just wont stop. Its to the point where he can even be in close proximity to my hands and still be humping what ever he's sitting on while looking at them. Its gross. I know its normal behaviour to be sexually hormonal, especially this time of year but its a GREAT problem now because he wont leave me alone.. or ppl that are near the cage. I have him 2 bird friends, SOOOO many toys.. unlimited amount of stimulation- their out side of their cages for the whole day till i put them to bed, water/baths for them, jungle jim play set,i even got a little female 'fake' budgie toy for him so that he would leave me alone. But nothing works.. i mean NOTHING. he's never been interested in toys. never.. he always just wanted to be on me and my hands. At first it wasn't a problem because he wasn't humping.. he was just pecking my nails like he would with another budgies beak.now its progressed to masturbating...he ejaculated on a stuffed animal in my room. This is why i asked for mature individuals for this question.... not the most pleasent and not the best topic. I actually wasnt going to post this, for i was unsure if it would be taken down. but after the stuffed toy insident.. i had to ask for some help. Im at a loss.so if anyone has any advice.. ill take anything, within 'good natured' means. Thank you, hope you can help.

But she doesnt like moving with my finger when shes on it and i move it she gets scared and hops of !! I am scared that if i bring her out of the cage she will just fly away and wont sit on my finger what should i do?? how long does training this take??

i had 2 budgies one died today i was wondering if i could add one to the cage. will they fight or will the be friends. the male died so now i have the female i was wondering if i could get another male for her.

hi this morning i woke up i noticed that my male budgie is not feeling well. he dosent eat or drink, and he has become very weak. he falls down to the cage floor all the time. i don't want to take him to the vet because the vet costs about $50 and i bought him for $20.what should i do to save him. please help ASAP

can female budgies reproduce on their own ? and how big should a cage be if i wanted to breed the budgies ? what is the set up for the cage & how much are they? also any other info about budgies would be nice THANK YOU ALL =]

I had one bugdie and he never played. He would sing a few times a day but not much at all. He just sat in the same place in his cage, which is pleanty big. He has toys, i bought him new ones too because i thought maybe he just didnt like the old ones. I rearranged his cage, i did everything i could think of. Finally i went out to get him a friend, she seemed quite lively at first but i dont know if she was just scared because now they both just sit in the same spot in the cage and now they never make noise!! What do i do?! I have just had the new one 2 days so maybe she is still scared...? Also, both were oddly comfertable with me. Niether were hand fed but it only took about 5 minutes to convince them to sit on my figer when they were each new... is this normal because it was my impression that budgies are quite weary of people at first.. I just feel bad for them, i dont want them to be unhappy! what do i do?!

how long do you have to have a budgie before you can let it out of its cage?

I had a blue budgie boy, named Charlie but he seemed so depressed. He sat in his cage and never did anything. I tryed everything i could, i played music, got him a new set of toys, rearranged his cage, gave him treats, nothing i could do helped him. I played with him every day but he just seemed so lonely. So today i went out and bought a new budgie to keep him company. I got a female yellow and green one, Delilah. They seem to be getting along great. They kiss and he seems happier. I am so suprised how friendly delilah is. She is still a bit shy but she is willing to sit on my finger and shoulder. Do you think that this new partner will help bring charlie out of his shell? Will charlie begin to dislike me because he is more attached to her? (He was still very friendly with me today). Also, any tips on bonding with my new delilah? I just want mr. and mrs. goodfeathers to have a happy home : )

I'm not concerned about how much they can talk, but which one generally makes a better pet, I would like to be able to handle them and take him/her out of the cage. I don't have any bird breeders around me so I'm getting it from a bird specialty store.

I'm getting a budgie on june 28 2009, and was wondering when I buy it, what do they put the budgie in? And how do I get it in the cage??

Are they affectionate? Can you train them to be hand-tamed? Can 1 parakeet live in a medium-small cockatiel cage? any opinions on these birds are welcome.

i put my birds cage out side. i have a budgie and 2 cockatiels in the cage. The budgie got out of his cage and went into the cockitiel cage and ever since i left him in there. he really leave the cage and is not tamed. if he does leave to a quick flight he comes back instantly. anyway to i come up to the cage and i see squirrels around the cage and the budgie is missing. i looked all over because i thought the squirrels killed him but did not find any evidence of the dead bird. did the squirrels eat him whole? did they scare him to fly away. i know he wouldn't come out by himself even though he could if he wanted to.

I have a bonded pair of budgies (1 male 1 female) They have a nest box and I have seen them mate a few times early this year but no eggs. Is their anything I can do to help them?? Would having another pair of budgies help as they are the only birds in our house. They would have to be in a different cage as I like my birds to have lots of space. they have egg food as well They are both over a year old now. And yes I have 1 male 1 female you can tell by their nose band things. (I can't think what its call - but I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about) my budgies are about 18 mths now and yes blue boy and brown girl

i have just got a new budgie and i want it to be comfy because it can not fly yet it can nearly perch but is it ok to pur some hay on the floor of a budgie cage this is my first time please help

Right now I have a pair of budgies, male 1 year old, female 3 yrs old. I want to buy anothr pair of budgies, from a store like PETSMART, where they are 3 months old. Two Irishmen walk into a pet shop in Dingle. They head to the bird section and Gerry says to Paddy, "Dat's dem." The owner comes over and asks if he can help them. "Yeah, we'll take four of dem dere little budgies in dat cage up dere," says Gerry. The owner puts the budgies in a paper bag. Paddy and Gerry pay for the birds, leave the shop and get into Gerry's truck to drive to the top of the Connor Pass. At the Connor Pass, Gerry looks down at the 1000-foot drop and says, "Dis looks like a grand place." He takes two birds out of the bag, puts them on his shoulders and jumps off the cliff. Paddy watches as Gerry falls all the way to the bottom, killing himself stone dead. Looking down at the remains of his best pal, Paddy shakes his head and says, "Fook dat. Dis budgie jumping is too fook'n dangerous for me!" Scroll down - THERE'S MORE Moment's later, Seamus arrives up at Connor Pass. He's been to the pet shop too and walks up to the edge of the cliff carrying another paper bag in one hand and a shotgun in the other. "Hi, Paddy. Watch dis," Seamus says. He takes a parrot from the bag and throws himself over the edge of the cliff. Paddy watches as half way down, Seamus takes the gun and shoots the parrot. Seamus continues to plummet down and down until he hits the bottom and breaks every bone in his body. Paddy shakes his head and says, "And I'm never trying dat parrotshooting either!" Scroll down - IT IS NOT OVER YET Paddy is just getting over the shock of losing two friends when Sean Og appears. He's also been to the pet shop and is carrying a paper bag out of which he pulls a chicken. Sean Og then hurls himself off the cliff and disappears down and down until he hits a rock and breaks his spine. Once more Paddy shakes his head. "Fook dat, lads. First dere was Gerry with his budgie jumping, den Seamus parrotshooting...and now Sean Og and his fook'n hen-gliding!"

He's a male budgie, and he's around 1 year old. I know birds usually regurgitate to show love and affecting, but I just want to be sure this is actually what he's doing. He leans his head backwards a little and looks as though he just drops it. His neck doesn't bend though, it just goes straight down into where his shoulders would be. He does this a few times, then I hear seeds fly and hit the wall and floor. Occasionally he shakes his head sideways while spitting the seeds. He usually does this at night before I cover him to sleep. Also, he loves to dance throughout the day, and sometimes he flings seeds at night while dancing. Sometimes while he's sitting on his perch I'll hear him start biting something. I'm assuming it's a seed, but could he just be grinding his beak? There's always a cuttle bone in his cage, and he uses it. Other than this, he is very lively and active, he eats, drinks, and poops normally, and he's quite friendly. Thanks in advance. I thought about getting him a female, but I like him being my little buddy and bonding with me..

ok so i have 4 budgies in a cage. two blue male and female and 2 green male and female. This morning my green female layed her first egg. wooohooo... and then i came home from work and my blue male budgie was dead and the blue female looks sick or like she has been attatcked on her face a little. Do you think the green female is getting teritorial? should i take the blue female budgie out? becuase i dont want her to die either. help??????????????????? the cage is pretty big its about a metre x metre the green female has been sitting on her egg today. the female blue budgie looks really scared and whenever the green female goes near her she opens her beak and looks like she is trying to protect herself. There is no blood or anything on her face but the are a couple of feathers missing. Im not sure what to do cuz i want to get her out of there asap if she isnt happy in the cage. my other blue male that died today was only around a year old and he looks fine this morning :( i have 3 nestboxes in the cage. he looked fine he was flying and looked happy even my dad was suprised he died and he has been breeding budgies since he was a kid and not in the way by putting two together in a cage just to mate.

Why do people still insist on buying birds to keep them solitary in a tiny cage, my mum has a 6ft by 8ft by 3ft in her kitchen. She has budgies, love birds, zebra finches. They are always active, always building a nest and picking about in the branches and long grass my mum always gives them on a daily basis. I saw a zebra finch in a small cage on its own sitting on a perch, doing nothing, staring into space as it had nothing to occupy itself. Then I look at my mums birds constantly doing something. So much more enjoyment.

i have 2 parakeets and im thinking of getting a quaker i would be putting them in the same cage to. would they get along?

My pet budgies never use bird baths and the only water they use in their cage is the water they drink. Would it be a good idea to get a water spray and occassionally spray them with water to refresh them? Or would the budgies not like it? I have tried all sorts of bird baths but they just poo in them more than anything else.

Budgie Cage Requirements

Budgie cage requirements, what bird cages to avoid, recommended budgie cages...

    Budgie Cage Requirements:
  • The cage should not be made of toxic metals such as zinc, lead, or brass (wet brass tarnishes - this tarnish is toxic). Stainless steel is best or powder-coated.
  • Do not put your budgie in a cage that is rusted or has chipping paint.
  • If you find an old cage in the attic, basement, trash-picking, or at a yard sale that only has a few rusty patches or a little chipping paint and you want to re-paint it for your budgie - DON'T. Throw it out and get a new cage on eBay. The cost of getting a cage sanded down and then powder-coated is more than you would pay for a new cage on eBay.
  • Big enough for the budgie to not only fully turn around and spread out their wings, but to fly from one side to another - a absolute minimum of 18x18x24.. Buy the biggest cage you can afford. Parrot cages are MUCH cheaper online than they are in the petstore. Please check ebay for new parrot cages at great prices!
  • Horizontal bars because budgies love to climb!
  • Width is more important than height as budgies fly horizontally.
  • Bar spacing should be no wider than 1/2 inch so that the budgie doesn't get their head stuck between the bars. Their heads are smaller than they look!
  • No round cages - a budgie doesn't feel safe in a round cage - there is no back wall to retreat to. Along the same lines, be sure there is a wall behind at least one side of the cage.
  • A good size rectangular cage is best - the palace shape or house shapes actually restrict the room the budgie has to fly and play and create a mess of poop and food the others do not.
  • Do not place the cage next to a window. Drafts can cause the budgie to become sick. Keep the cage out of direct sunlight.
  • Place the cage in a room you spend alot of time in (though not the kitchen - because of fumes and hot unsafe surfaces) but that will be quiet at night.
  • Budgies require alot of mental stimulation. Be sure they have lots of fun toys and that you rotate the toys frequently so that they do not become bored and so they get used to change.
  • Budgie-proof the room the budgie will be flying in by making sure no open water surfaces, open windows/doors, uncurtained windows, other pets, etc will harm them.
  • Be sure to cover the cage at night to provide darkness and a secure cover to prevent night-frights.
  • Several perches of varying widths are necessary to promote healthy feet and legs and to prevent foot sores caused by plain wooden dowels. We recommend the wood branch perches and rope perches.
  • Avoid: sand perch covers (cause foot sores), mite protectors (cause respiratory illness), bedding (breeds fungus and can cause crop impaction when injested) - paper towels or plain newsprint are best so you can watch poops for health.
  • Covered food and water dishes so budgies don't poop in them and get sick.
  • Cuttle bone to chew on. It's good for their beaks and provides needed calcium.
  • Use pipe cleaners or twist ties to secure all cage doors and windows. Budgies are smart little buggers and can quickly and easily figure out how to give themselves some unsupervised out time!
  • Place the best wood perches up high - and the stone ones that are good for toe nail health down low. Budgies like to be up high and will spend most of their time on the nicer perches that are good for their feet. We don't recommend using the wooden dowels that come with cages for anything other than step-ups and collecting budgies from around the room to return to their cages.
  • Make sure there is a food bowl for each budgie in the cage so that they don't have to fight over it or the dominant budgie doesn't let the other budgies near the food.
  • If you are going to have several budgies in the same cage - it's better to move them at the same time rather than moving a new bird into another's birds cage to avoid territorial issues.
